Well Preventative Care

At Children’s Oasis Pediatrics, we believe that the best way to keep your child healthy is to focus on prevention—not just treatment. That’s why we strongly recommend routine well preventative visits for every child, from newborn through adolescence.

These visits are built on guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and they are one of the most important tools we have to support your child’s growth, development, and overall well-being.
Think of these visits as your child’s “health roadmap”—they help us stay ahead of concerns rather than chasing them later.

What Are Well Preventative Visits?

Well visits are scheduled check-ups when your child is healthy, not sick.

They allow us to:

  • trouble breathing, gasping, or choking
  • Catch concerns early (before they become bigger problems)
  • Partner with you on parenting, behavior, nutrition, and safety
  • Build a long-term relationship with your child and family

The AAP recommends visits at regular intervals, including:

Newborn (a few days after birth)
1 month
2 months
4 months
6 months
9 months
12 months
15 months
18 months
2 years
30 months (2 ½ years)
3 years and then yearly thereafter.

What Happens at a Well Visit?

We like to think of these visits as a team meeting about your child—you, your child, and your pediatrician all working together.
    1. Growth and Physical Exam (a.k.a. “How did they grow that fast?”)
    2. We carefully measure height/length, weight, and head circumference (for infants). We plot these on growth charts and look at trends over time—not just one number. Then we perform a full physical exam from head to toe.
    3. Developmental Screening
    4. We assess how your child is developing in areas like:
      • Language and communication
      • Motor skills (rolling, walking, coordination)
      • Social and emotional development
For example, at early visits we talk about milestones like smiling, rolling, and babbling, and later visits include language, behavior, and school readiness. These types of developmental expectations are outlined in our parent guidance handouts. If something isn’t quite on track, catching it early gives us more options to help.
    5. Nutrition and Feeding Guidance
    6. This is where we get very practical. We’ll talk through:
      • Breastfeeding or formula feeding in infancy
      • Introducing solid foods
      • Managing picky eating (yes, it happens to almost everyone)
      • Healthy nutrition for school-aged kids and teens
We focus on simple, doable steps—not perfection.
    7. Sleep and Behavior Support
    8. Sleep struggles? Tantrums? Screen time battles? You are not alone—and this is exactly what well visits are for. We’ll help you:
      • Build healthy sleep routines
      • Navigate behavior challenges
      • Set realistic expectations for your child’s age
Small changes here can make a big difference at home.
    9. Immunizations
    10. Vaccines are a key part of preventative care. At each visit, we follow the AAP immunization schedule to protect your child from serious illnesses. We always:
      • Review which vaccines are due
      • Discuss benefits and common side effects
      • Answer your questions
    11. Safety Counseling
    12. As your child grows, the risks change—and so does our guidance. We cover topics like:
      • Car seat safety
      • Safe sleep practices
      • Water safety
      • Screen time
      • Mental health and social media (for older kids)
Our goal is to help you stay one step ahead.
    13. Time for Your Questions
    14. This may be the most important part. No question is too small:
      • “Is this rash normal?”
      • “Should they be talking more?”
      • “Why won’t my toddler eat anything green?”
We want you to leave feeling informed, reassured, and confident.

Why These Visits Matter

Here’s the honest truth: kids don’t come with instruction manuals.
Well visits are the closest thing we have.
They’re about keeping healthy kids healthy—and helping you feel confident along the way.
They allow us to: Detect issues early (when they are easiest to address)

  • Prevent illness and injury
  • Support healthy habits that last a lifetime

And just as importantly, they allow us to build a relationship with your child over time—something we value deeply.

Our Approach at Children’s Oasis Pediatrics

We combine:

  • The science of evidence-based medicine
  • With the art of practical, real-life parenting
